For years now I have been making backups of my files. I have a separate drive that all my music, pictures, docs and so on get backed up on every hour using Apple's portable home directory feature. The part that always bothered me was I never had a current off site back up of that data. Sure every six months or so I would burn a new copy of our pictures to a DVD and my wife would keep the copy at work. The problem with that is I can’t imagine loosing six months of pictures or the rest of my data to a fire or a thief. Enter Mozy! Just a quick list of what they offer:
Open/locked file support
- 448-bit Blowfish encryption (to secure your data on our server)
- 128-bit SSL encryption (to secure your data during transport)
- Automatic or scheduled backups
- New and changed file detection
- Block level incremental backups
- Bandwidth throttling
- File versioning
- Public or private key encryption
- Unlimited storage with payed account - 2 gigs with free account
- Continuous or scheduled backup options
- Restore from online or have DVD’s mailed to you
- 30 days of file revisions
All this and only $5 a month for personal use. It did take a while to upload all my data. 80 gigs and all, but well worth it knowing I always have an off site backup of my data. The Mac client is in beta and has a few rough edges but still works very well. I rest a little better now knowing if my files go up in a blaze of glory or sticky fingers walk off with them I now have some place to get them back. For $5 a month you don’t have an excuse to not have an off site backup of your data.
