pantsWell we went on our weekly STP ride yesterday.  As usual it rained for half of it, but unlike rides in the past I finally got some rain gear.  I bought Cannondale’s Grind Pants.  They are actually designed for Mountain Biking but they work great for me.  One nice thing about these pants is if the weather does turn for the better you can actually zip off the bottom part and you are left with shorts on.  Yesterday after it stopped raining the sun came out for a bit but you could see up ahead that it was raining.  So I didn’t want to take the pant legs off but I was getting a little warm.  I found some zippers on the front inseams (no it was not the fly) and sure enough they were vents.  It was just the perfect amount of cool air till the rain started again.  I also got some booties for my feet.  They keep your feet warm and dry in the rain.  So as it rained on us yesterday it was the first time where I was not miserably cold.  The best thing I can describe it to is having good snow gear.  Sure you could go skiing in a pair of jeans but you are going to be cold quick.  Same thing here.  I kept riding in this weather in just shorts and vented bike shoes.  Back to the pants.  The other cool thing they have on them is some straps on the front that synch around your legs.  If you mountain bike you know how nice this is.  On downhill docents you are hardly on your seat.  Most of the time you are balancing behind it but there are times you come back above it.  The problem with baggy shorts or pants is they get caught on the seat as you slide back.  With these synch straps it is not a problem.  I highly recommend them.

oldman Now for the weird part of the ride.  I have ridden this loop before in worse shape and not had a problem with it.  This time was not the case.  I would say 40 miles in my legs started doing weird stuff.  Its hard to describe but I felt like before we left I didn’t have any energy.  When we hit 35 I was done and we still had 20 to go.  At about 7 left going up a hill I experienced the worst cramping in both my legs I have ever felt.  It was so painful and I could not move them.  They were literally stuck strait for about five minutes.  I tried to walk up the hill but they tried to cramp up again.  I thought I was going to have to call my wife to pick me up.  After a bit they started to loosen up and I stretched them out and I was able to carefully ride the rest of the way home.  Its really tweaked me out as I am not sure why it happened.  I have been much more tired and worn out on rides and never had this happen.  I must be getting old. :(  Everyone said that my legs would be in a lot of pain today from the cramping and they are not.  I feel like I just went on a bike ride.  I am keeping my finger crossed that it was something I ate or something like that otherwise I may just have to take up fishing from a chair.  We will see next weekend.

Network and Portable Home Directories Print E-mail

ministackI have a few Macs around that I use for different things.  The thing I hated the most when using multiple macs was if I did something on one that file or preference I made was not on the other.  Not anymore.  I have mac os x server running on my mac mini.  Starting with 10.4 server apple introduced something called Portable Home Directories.  Basically it lets you put your home folder on the server and it keeps a synced copy of it on any mac that you want.  The reason I haven’t done this sooner was the mini had a 40 gig hard drive and my laptop had a 100 gig drive.  I couldn’t get my home directory to fit on the mini if I wanted to.  Part of a backup solution I needed to do made this all possible.  I bought a cool little device call the MiniStack v2 which is a hard drive enclosure that fits under the mini.  It also adds more firewire ports and USB ports.  I put a 250 gig drive in the MiniStack and now my laptop is in sync with the server.  If my wife needs to use my laptop I can jump right on the mini and keep on working.  The other cool thing you can do once you have the portable home directories set up is the ability to get all the information of your home directory over the network.  For instance my wife has an account on the mini but not on my laptop.  Now she can log into her account on the laptop and it will open her home directory on the mini.  Everything is read and written directly to the mini while she does it and the speed is not bad even over a wireless connection.  I know that most people will never have a need for it but if you have more than one mac in the house it is really worth looking into.

Video Games
Wednesday, 12 April 2006
laraShe has video games and movies but they have all sucked of recent.  Her glory days were back in the mid 90’s when she first came out.  Since then the games have gotten worse and worse where the last one was so pathetic I don’t think anyone but the hardcore Lara Croft lover bought it.  Well a new team took over the project and the original designer of Lara Croft came back to make the new Tomb Raider: Legend which is out today.  A demo for the game was put up a few days ago on Xbox live marketplace and I have to admit it was a lot of fun.  They borrowed lots of fun game mechanics from other games that worked and incorporated it into their game.  I don’t have a problem with that when it makes for a fun game.  That is the entire point of making a video game.  thumb_laracroft_bling360If you loved the game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time you will like this game a lot as they borrowed from that one almost everything just short of the wall walking.  My only problem is I don’t like to get a new game before I finish the last one I started.  I still have more to go on GRAW .  Once I finish that one this will be the next one to pick up.  Maybe by that time it will have dropped a bit in price.  Microsoft in Germany is so excited about this game that they have a custom Xbox 360 made in the image of Lara using 43,000 tiny crystals.  It is worth about $11,000 not including the price of glue.  If you live over there you can sign up for the contest to win it.

But the cat came back the very next day Print E-mail

cat_comes_back I am starting to feel like that nursery rhyme song.  No mater what you do the cat comes back the very next day.  Yesterday I spent most of the day pulling everything out of the garage to clean it.  Then put it all back in.  The garage was open all day and I wasn’t in there the entire time.  I was hoping the cat was gone.  I actually believed it was gone since I had pulled out all of its little hiding places.  Last night I filled our cats food and water bowl and opened the garage a bit to let our cat in to eat.  She didn’t come in so I closed the door and she stayed out there all night.  This morning I go down to let our cat in and the food and water dish are empty.  AHHHHH!   The stupid strey cat is still hiding somewhere in the garage.  It was stuck again in the garage all night and ate the food, then tried all the windows again to get out.  Dang it I just cleaned those yesterday.  I looked everywhere for it.  I don’t know where it is hiding.  I am lost on what to do with it now.  Animal control will only come out if you have the stupid thing trapped.  They wont come out if I don’t know where it is.  This is really making me mad.  Darn you Washington state and your no antifreeze soaked chicken to get rid of the cat solution.  Just joking I wouldn’t do that but this lady had the same problem and is in jail for a month now.  I guess she could have gone for five years.  If you have any ideas on how to get this cat out without getting PETA on my case I would be happy to know.

pawprintsI went out this morning to see if the cat was still behind the sink.  It wasn’t and I couldn’t find it.  I am sure that it was in there somewhere so I just cracked open the garage door so it will leave.  I didn’t want to deal with it anymore today.  I know it will be back in a few.  In the mean time I will be cleaning up bloody paw prints.

chuck-norris

Our wonderful neighbor at the end of the street thinks she is doing stray cats a favor by feeding them.  Everyone in the neighborhood has asked her to stop but she wont.  Every spring there is a new litter of kittens and once they have grown up a bit they find there is not enough food at the shared kitty bowl and one eventually finds its way into our garage.  I found one last year and it was one mean cat.  The kind that tries to tear your eyes out just cause you looked at it.  If I didn’t know that it was a stray cat I would have guessed that Chuck Norrris owned and trained the cat.  So after trying to catch the thing for an hour in a messy garage I gave up and called animal control.  He even had a hard time catching it.  I was ready to just get a taser because the stupid thing was tearing up my garage.  We finally managed to catch it and he took it away.

Now comes the sequel.  Its spring and time for a fresh new litter thanks to our wonderful neighbor.  A week ago I notice that the garage was starting to smell like cat.  At about midnight that night I had finished working and was getting more wood pellets out of the garage for the stove before going to bed.  Then I saw this white cat trying to claw its way out under the garage door.  It freaked out when it saw me.  I spent the next hour trying to catch the stupid thing.  I didn’t want it in there peeing on things but I didn’t want to let it go just to have it come back.  After trying an hour I couldn’t catch it so I left the garage open a bit hoping it would leave and I believed it did.  The cat smell started to go away and I thought after all the poking and prodding I did to it trying to catch it, it would never want to come back.  I was wrong.

catThis Saturday I went out to get ready for my STP training ride and thought to myself the garage stinks again.  It smelled like cat.  I had hoped that maybe if it was in there it will leave while the garage was open as I got ready to ride.  It wasn’t so.  I went out there this evening to put something away and out of the corner of my eye i saw it dashing behind some boxes.  And guess what, it peed on one of the chairs in there.  I spent the last hour again trying to catch it when it lodged itself behind our utility sink.  I am fairly sure it is stuck in there.  I am not about to stick my hand and arm in there to catch some infection when it bites or claws me.  I tried to take a picture of it but the only opening was behind the washer and I only got a few shots before the battery died.  Hopefully animal control can come out first thing in the morning and pull that stupid cat out.  The sad thing is when I was trying to catch it I noticed all the windows had what looked like muddy smudges of cat prints on them.  I also notice them all over stuff in the garage.  We have red paint out there and I thought how in the world did it get into that, but at closer inspection it was blood.  No one has been in there since yesterday morning and the cat has scraped and clawed at everything during that time till now trying to get out and has bloody paws from it.  I don’t know if I should feel bad for it or get mad as all my stuff is stained.  I think I will ask my neighbor to come clean it up.  Maybe then it will make her think a little more before feeding the stray cats.  Then I am going to ask her if she wants that pee covered chair.

paintball gun On another note I found out on King Counties Website what you can legally do to an animal that trespasses on your property.  Well you can’t use lethal force.  Only non lethal methods can be used.  So like what am I supposed to do?  Tell the cat to go away nicely and hope it does not come back.  I can’t kill it and I am guessing that probably means the taser too.  Not that I want to kill it but this is King County and you knew there would be a law about it.  They also mentioned that a bb gun does not count as non lethal force.  Use a bb gun to try and scare it off and go to jail.  I can shoot my sister with it but not the cat.  You know what they did mention you could use.  A paint ball gun.  So next year when the next cat comes into my garage, instead of trying to catch it for an hour I am just going to have target practice.  Maybe that one will get the clue not to come back.  Okay I am a little bitter right now.  I do feel bad for the cats.  They shouldn’t have to fend for themselves like this.  They should be in a cat lovers lap purring away.  Not in my garage peeing on things trying to find food.
